Hazardous substances

Everyone uses hazardous substances on a daily basis, both at work and privately. Pay attention to the hazard pictograms in your own household. You will be surprised!

They're everywhere

Danger from hazardous substances is one of the most comprehensive chapters in occupational health and safety and in risk assessment. At the University of Constance in particular, hazardous substances are used in almost all areas. Mainly in the natural sciences, but also the humanities are not immune. Don't you think so? Then take a close look around (e.g. in the coffee kitchen).

The Ordinance on Hazardous Substances (GefStoffV) requires a risk assessment to be carried out. It assesses hazards from inhalation, skin contact, fire and explosions. It is completed when replacement solutions have been tested, the necessary operational measures to protect employees and third parties have been defined and the procedure for checking effectiveness has been established. The result of the risk assessment must be documented. In the Technical Rule on Hazardous Substances (TRGS 400), the procedure for deriving the hazard and the resulting measures is specified.
