Strong in research through promotion of junior researchers and interdisciplinary collaboration
Research in Konstanz is characterised by collaboration across departments and the performance-based allocation of resources. In the "Funding Atlas 2015" by the German Research Foundation (DFG), the University of Konstanz reaches place 1 nationwide in raising external funds relative to the "statistically expectable volume of external funding". Close interdisciplinary collaboration is promoted by flat hierarchies, faculty structures without institutions and the layout of our campus that promotes daily contact between researchers from all disciplines. Our research focuses in the Humanities and Social Sciences are Cultural Studies and Decision Sciences. In the Life Sciences and Natural Sciences they include Chemical Biology and Ecology as well as Nanoscience and Material Sciences.
Top-level research for the research location Germany
The University of Konstanz has been extremely successful in the competition of the best German universities in the second phase of the German Excellence Initiative: all of our four applications were approved. Our institutional strategy "Model Konstanz - Towards a Culture of Creativity" intends to advance our university as a centre for cutting-edge research.
We continually extend our international network and our collaboration with excellent, research-focused universities worldwide – for our researchers as well as for our students. Internationalisation has become an integral part here at the University of Konstanz.
"Deprivatised" doctoral training
Most of our doctoral candidates participate in a structured doctoral programme. Our Code of Practice for Academics between Doctoral Studies and Professorship commits our programmes to offer junior researchers the best possible framework conditions to support their research and careers. Our Zukunftskolleg is one of a kind. The freedom and independence that this interdisciplinary environment provides our “fellows” is exemplary.
