Strong in research through promotion of junior researchers and interdisciplinary collaboration

Research in Konstanz is characterised by collaboration across departments and the performance-based allocation of resources. In the "Funding Atlas 2018" by the German Research Foundation (DFG), the University of Konstanz is ranked 1st nationwide in regard to funding obtained per-capita for all academic staff (including professors). She also achieved excellent rankings in the "Funding Atlas 2015". Close interdisciplinary collaboration is promoted by flat hierarchies, faculty structures without institutions and the layout of our campus that promotes daily contact between researchers from all disciplines. Our research focuses are include Cultural Studies, Social and Cognitive Sciences with a Special Focus on Inequality Research, Collective Behaviour and Ecology, Chemical Biology and Nano and Materials Science.

Typically, universities that succeed in the Excellence Initiative and Strategy tend to be large institutions with a long-standing tradition. In succeeding as a relatively young and small institution, the University of Konstanz has revealed itself to be a true gem with the potential to lead the way to a bright future.

International interconnection

We continually extend our international network and our collaboration with excellent, research-focused universities worldwide – for our researchers as well as for our students. Internationalisation has become an integral part here at the University of Konstanz.

“Deprivatising” the training of early career researchers

Most of our doctoral candidates participate in a structured doctoral programme. Our Code of Practice for Academics between Doctoral Studies and Professorship commits our programmes to offer junior researchers the best possible framework conditions to support their research and careers. Our Zukunftskolleg is one of a kind. The freedom and independence that this interdisciplinary environment provides our “fellows” is exemplary.
