Konstanz Graduate School Chemical Biology Invites Calls for Scholarship Proposals
From 9 June to 21 July 2011, the Graduate School "Chemical Biology" will again invite proposals for research projects for doctoral students. Ten interdisciplinary projects are offered at the interface between Biology, Chemistry and Computer Science. Successful applicants will be able to receive a grant from 1 October 2011 onwards. The projects at the graduate school are based in the research fields of Synthetic Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biophysics, Biomedicine and Bioinformation Systems. What makes the current call for proposals special is the large number of young postdoctoral researchers among the project leaders: As future supervisors, they will be able to establish a very young team. All the projects stand out through the particularly intensive supervision they receive. Instead of just one person as the doctoral supervisor, a doctoral committee of three supervisors from the participating disciplines will take on this role. A differentiated course programme will be sure to broaden and deepen the disciplinary qualification. Seminars located at the interface between chemistry, biology and computer science are involved as are workshops on scientific communication and careers. The doctoral students additionally benefit from the lively exchange among themselves as well as with internationally distinguished cooperating partners from the graduate school.
84 doctoral students are currently working in the graduate school. 25% of these are international students, 50% are women. Together with supervisors, a team of around 130 scientists and researchers are working in the graduate school. The facility itself has been operational since autumn 2007 and is being funded under the Excellence Initiative by the German Federal and State Governments. The graduate school awards grants up to twice a year for doctoral projects.
