Jour Fixe Meeting

Research Visit

This programme seeks to enhance international research cooperation and to support international mobility.

The Zukunftskolleg of the University of Konstanz provides funding for Research Visits for international early career researchers (Invited Research Visits), Research Visits for international early career researchers from partner research institutions (Network Research Visits), as well as Research Visits for Zukunftskolleg Fellows (Outgoing Research Visits).

The duration of a Research Visit in either direction should range from one to three months. The grant will cover travel and accommodation costs and a contribution to the living costs.

Currently, we offer Network Research Visits and Outgoing Research Visits.

Network Research Visit

The Zukunftskolleg of the University of Konstanz provides funding for up to

3 x Network Research Visits for international early career researchers

lasting up to three months and based at the Zukunftskolleg in the year 2023.

Aim

Research Visits at the Zukunftskolleg support temporary research stays up to three months by international early career researchers from our bilateral partner research institutions. The aim of the Research Visits is to provide an opportunity to engage in a research project at the University of Konstanz, ideally in collaboration with a Zukunftskolleg fellow. No limitation is placed on the area of research within the humanities, natural and social sciences. Interdepartmental and interdisciplinary research is encouraged.

Visiting researchers receive a shared working space in the Zukunftskolleg with all the usual research facilities and are expected to participate in all Zukunftskolleg’s activities. Experimental projects in the natural sciences can only be supported if arrangements for lab space are made with the respective departments, since the Zukunftskolleg does not have any laboratory space of its own.

Funding will include round trip travel to Konstanz (economy fare), up to 800€ per month for accommodation in Konstanz and a contribution to the living costs. The Zukunftskolleg will not offer employment contracts for Research Visits. As a university-based Institute for Advanced Study within the German academic system the Zukunftskolleg follows the family oriented strategies of the University of Konstanz.

Benefits for visiting researchers

Outgoing Research Visit

The Zukunftskolleg of the University of Konstanz provides funding for

Outgoing Research Visits for Zukunftskolleg Fellows

lasting for one to three months to either a partner institution or a research institution of the applicant’s choice.

Aim

This support measure seeks to enhance the learning experiences of our fellows and support their international career paths. The programme provides funding for the Zukunftskolleg’s fellows to take on temporary assignments at a partner Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) OR any international research university. The Research Visits are intended to facilitate research collaboration or publications, enable new teaching experiences or provide for a scientific retreat for fellows to complete papers, books or project proposals. It offers an opportunity to finish ongoing work and/or to identify and explore new and innovative directions for future research. Moreover, fellows can establish stronger international networks within academia and consequently advance their career development.

We encourage fellows to invest ample time in their Research Visits. Thus, the duration of temporary assignments should range from one to three months. The grant may be used to cover travel, accommodation costs and a contribution to the living costs. The fellow’s salary will continue to be paid by the Zukunftskolleg during the temporary assignment.

Host institutions

Fellows can choose from a list of partner institutions OR identify and contact host institutions fellows themselves. The external host should provide fellows with working infrastructure (office, IT, library/lab access, etc.) and administrative support with organisational matters during their one to three-month stay. Ideally, programme participants will promote scholarly collaboration across disciplines while profiting from the career supporting measures at each host institution.

If you choose a partner Institute for Advanced Study as your host institution, no letter of intent is necessary, as the Zukunftskolleg and the listed partner IAS have already agreed on the terms of Research Visits. After the successful application, the Zukunftskolleg Central Office will forward the fellow’s documents and discuss possible dates and capacities with the respective partner institute. Please find a current list of partner institutes below:

We are continuously enlarging and deepening our institutional ties worldwide. We will keep you updated on new partnerships. Please find the profiles of all IAS partners in our intranet and additional information on our website.

If you choose to select a different host institution, you will need the host to specify its commitment in a letter of intent. Templates are available from the Central Office. As the Zukunftskolleg is member in the NetIAS (Network of European Institutes for Advanced Study) and the UBIAS network (University-based Institutes for Advanced Study) a Research Visit at any of the affiliated institutes is recommended. More details are available from Central Office (Contract: Daniela Kromrey).

The Outgoing Centre of the university provides non-academic support with planning and preparing for a research stay abroad (Contact: Anke Hagedorn).

Eligibility

Zukunftskolleg Postdoctoral, Hector and Research Fellows are invited to apply for Research Visits if their fellowships are scheduled to end after their return from abroad (ideally 3 months should be left in the fellowship period upon return).

Application

Submit your application documents in English as a single PDF file to zukunftskolleg@uni-konstanz.de.
Applications should include the following materials:

  • A letter of motivation (max. 2 pages) stating the objectives for your research stay abroad as well as your choice of partner institute OR external host of your own choice;
  • In case of research institution of own choice: documentation of interest in the cooperation (i.e. formal letter of intent) and a brief profile of the institution/university;
  • Timeline for the proposed activities in 2023/24;
  • Expenditure plan for the year 2023/24.

Please hand in your application to the Executive Committee of the Zukunftskolleg one week before the next EC meeting.
