The Jour Fixe talk by Noelia Martínez Doallo (Law) questioned the following topic: Biomedical Research Involving Human Subjects. Is There a Duty to Participate?

Noelia Martínez Doallo (new Research Fellow / Law) presented the following topic: Biomedical Research Involving Human Subjects. Is There a Duty to Participate?

Abstract:
Undeniably, biomedical research is an important activity for the prosperity not just of human beings, but also of all species. However, and especially nowadays, there is a palpable tendency of mistrust towards biomedical research and its outcomes.
This is a particularly hard problem in a pandemic context. We can trace different sources of this mistrust: historical, philosophical, and even normative. However, there are some possible paths to follow in order to attain a defence of biomedical research, and which could justify a moral duty to participate in this scientific activity as research subjects. These routes are not novel, but promising whether adequately adapted to our contemporary societies. Theories of justice provide a suitable framework to start this journey, and appeals to the common good or human flourishing leave enough room for the discussion on this subject matter.
