Conceptual Change in Set Theory - Combining Mathematics, Philosophy and History

Jour Fixe talk by Carolin Antos on November 30, 2016

Carolin Antos, Associated Fellow of the Zukunftskolleg affiliated with the Department of Philosophy,  presented her lecture "Conceptual Change in Set Theory - Combining Mathematics, Philosophy and History".

The mathematical discipline of set theory has a rather special status as it is also thought of as a foundation for mathematics. In her talk, Carolin shows how one of its subjects of study, the curious case of different sized infinities, began a development that eventually triggered a conceptual change in set theory. Carolin traces this change by working in mathematics, its philosophy and its history and she discusses some aspects of this interdisciplinary research with the audience.
