Helpful hints for all online editors

If you are writing in German, please follow the recommendations for writing in German. If you are writing in English, please follow the tips for writing English texts.

Make sure to use the TYPO3 user handbook (in German).

Accordions

Please consider your use of accordions carefully. Accordions are basically a list of additional information. The classic example: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs).

Possible alternative: Enter the content in individual text elements, with the heading H3 for each one, and give the page either a table of contents or a glossary element.

Amount of menu levels

In the interest of user-friendliness, the number of menu levels is limited (the amount of elements within a certain content element). In some cases this is also a technical limitation in TYPO3, and you cannot add more than this amount of elements. The maximum amounts are:

Menu levels

  • Structure/menu level 1 (page header): 5
  • Structure/menu level 2 (flyout menu): 8
  • Structure/menu level 3 (navigation left column, click to view): 9
  • Structure/menu level 4 (navigation left column, appears automatically below level 3): 9
  • Lower structure/menu levels: 7

Content elements

  • “Verteiler Standard” distribution pages/tiles: 9 per block, 12 per page
  • “Verteiler Standard” distribution pages/tiles with a dropdown menu: 7 links per dropdown list
  • “Verteiler Service” distribution pages: 9 links per service box
  • Detail page/links and downloads: 12 links or files
  • Detail page/accordion: 9 per accordion (recommendation)
  • Detail page/timeline: 9 per timeline (recommendation)

Images

Websites can use colour images. There are two main rules of thumb:

  1. Header images are always in colour, all other images are black and white.
  2. Images that are unclear in black and white (for example, necessary complex graphics) may be shown in colour.

If you are using landscape format images, we recommend using images with 1280x720 pixels. Images with good resolution should have at least 600 pixels, but not more than 1000 pixels.

Images you are free to use are available from the “Bilderpool” (image pool) in the TYPO3 file tree. We recommend that you use these images.

If the pool does not have a new image (in corporate design) of something you would like to show, please use a placeholder image in corporate design instead. Then you can email your wish list of motifs, preferably a complete list, to the online editors.

Table of contents/glossary

Please use the table of contents only at the beginning of the page.

You can give the table of contents a title, such as “topics” or “archive”.

Page titles and headings

You have probably already noticed that the page title is always automatically displayed at the top of the page. The page title should be as short and informative as possible; it is important for search engines and is used to generate the URL. If the page title is too long, it could generate an incorrect URL and cause error 404 (meaning that visitors cannot access the website). This is why you can use the blue-highlighted heading (“Überschrift” field in the header) to set a heading that is mainly focused on getting readers’ attention and is less focused on being informative. We have included an excellent example for you.

Tables

Please only use tables for numbers, and even then, use them sparingly. Tables filled with text, which are often used in Word files and print layouts, are ill-suited for online use. Such tables cannot adjust to the responsive design, since they only have a limited ability to change their size/spacing, and this makes them less user-friendly for those with mobile devices.

Possible alternatives could include using lists of definitions, numbered lists/bullet points or sub-pages instead.

Text format

Please consider the following when designing your pages: The following content elements only offer very limited (if any!) text formatting options:

  • In accordions: for setting links and formatting paragraphs
  • In info boxes: for formatting paragraphs
  • In sliders/timelines: for formatting paragraphs
  • In contact boxes: for formatting paragraphs
  • In tiles on “Verteilerseite Standard” distribution pages
  • In teaser texts on “Verteilerseite Standard” and “Verteilerseite Service” distribution pages

This means, in these elements, you cannot use any images, place text in bold or insert numbered lists/bullet points, lists of definitions or tables.
