„Gremienbonus“ (bonus for committee work) for female professors

The University of Konstanz aimes at a gender balance for decision-making bodies and functional offices. However, since women are still underrepresented in professorships, this requirement creates a tension. This is because female professors have to take on more committee work than they can proportionately ensure based on their basic population. Therefore, a reward model has been defined to create relief for female professors for their committee work within the framework of the Excellence Strategy as well as in the Equal Opportunities Plan. It was developed on the basis of a quantitative and qualitative survey of (female) professors and approved by the Equal Opportunities Council and the Rectorate.

General information

What is the aim of this tender?

The aim of this tender is to value and reward above-average committee work by female professors and to promote the goal of parity in committee membership. The bonus (for staff or material resources) will be awarded once a year by the Equal Opportunity Council through a simple application process.

Am I eligible to apply?

All female professors and junior professors at the University of Konstanz are eligible to apply. Substitute professors and visiting professors are excluded. Professors whose identity does not correspond to the standardised gender identities, e.g. transgender, transsex, intersex, agender, are also addressed. Persons who hold an office and already receive a reduction in teaching load of at least four SWS or at least a 50% position for relief are excluded from the application process.

How is the “Gremienbonus” awarded?

The bonus is awarded on the basis of a number of points for committee memberships. In the online mask, you can indicate in which committees you were a member in the past academic year. You will receive between 1 and 5 points for each committee, depending on the time spent on the meeting, including preparation and follow-up, and depending on the strategic responsibility of the committee. Appointment committees as well as “Ombudspersons” are also taken into account. An extra point is awarded for the chair. You can also indicate whether you have any limiting individual circumstances, which result in up to three additional points. The total number of points is compared with the median of all professors at the university. Junior professors and W3/2/C4/3-professors are considered separately. If your score is above this median, your application will be considered for funding. The available programme budget is then allocated among the funded female professors according to their score. You will receive information about the funding and the amount approximately 4 weeks after the application deadline.

How can the “Gremienbonus” be used?

You will be allocated a budget that you can use within the framework of the budgetary requirements, e.g. for student or academic assistants, for an assigned position (e.g. research assistant, administrative employee, secretary, technical employee), as well as material and investment funds (e.g. business trips, IT, teaching assignment, equipment). The funds can be spent in the approved calendar year within the framework of the budgetary requirements of the Excellence Strategy.

Please indicate truthfully in the following list which committees you were a member of in WS 2022/23 and/or SS 2023, regardless of whether by election, by appointment or by virtue of office. If you were a member in both semesters, you will receive the specified number of points for the committee. If you were a member in only one of the two semesters, you will receive half the number of points. If you were chairperson, you will receive an additional point. At the end, you can indicate the extent to which individual life circumstances have had a limiting effect on you during this time. This may increase your total points.

Die Universität Konstanz setzt sich dafür ein, Prozesse und Strukturen familien- und diversitygerecht zu gestalten. It recognises that various living conditions can restrict participation in committees or make the decision to work in committees more difficult. Therefore, this circumstance should be taken into account through possible additional points.

Wenn Sie nun Ihre Punkte zusammenzählen, können Sie ihn mit dem Median aller Professor*innen zum Erhebungszeitpunkt 30.6.2021 vergleichen:

Der Median aller W3/2/C4/3-Professor*innen lag bei 8. Wenn Sie als Professorin 9 oder mehr Punkte haben, werden Sie gefördert.

Der Median aller Juniorprofessor*innen lag bei 0,5. Wenn Sie als Juniorprofessorin 1 oder mehr Punkte haben, werden Sie gefördert.

Die Fördersumme wird proportional an die Geförderten ausgeschüttet. Dazu wird die Punktzahl einer Professorin anteilig zur Gesamtpunktezahl vergütet.

Beispiel: Sie sind Professorin und haben 10 Punkte, Sie werden demnach gefördert. Die 10 Punkte machen 5% der Gesamtpunktezahl aller geförderten Professorinnen (z.B. 200 Punkte) aus. Sie erhalten daher 5% der Gesamtfördersumme, was in etwa 4.000 Euro entspricht.

The median of all W3/2/C4/3-professors was 8. If you have 9 or more points as a professor, you will be funded.

The median of all junior professors was 0.5. If you have 1 or more points as a junior professor, you will be funded.

The funding amount is distributed proportionally to the recipients according to the number of points.

Example: You are a professor and have 10 points, so you receive funding. The 10 points make up 5% of the total number of points of all funded female professors (e.g. 200 points). You therefore receive 5% of the total funding amount, which is roughly equivalent to 4,000 euros.
