Today, Monday 5 March 2018, Professor Ulrich Rüdiger was elected to become the new rector of RWTH Aachen University. As per § 17 para. 5 Hochschulgesetz NRW (higher education law of North Rhine-Westfalia), Rüdiger's first term will last six years and start on 1 August 2018. Rüdiger was elected by the Hochschulwahlversammlung (university election committee), one half of which is comprised of all Senate members, the other of all members of the Board of Governors. The Findungskommission (Search Committee), which was appointed at the beginning of the procedure, nominated Rüdiger as the only candidate. Ulrich Rüdiger will succeed Professor Ernst Schmachtenberg, who is no longer available for the office of rector by reason of age.

“It is both a challenge and great joy for me to become rector of a leading technical university”, said Ulrich Rüdiger after his election in Aachen. “After a total of eleven years as a member of the University of Konstanz’s rectorate, nine of which I served as its rector, I look forward to a whole new range of tasks”, he continued. “The University of Konstanz is a fantastic university whose members I owe a lot to and which has a long and successful path ahead of it. Becoming rector of RWTH Aachen University is very important to me for personal reasons and I look forward to taking this step very much”.

The University of Konstanz will now begin proceedings to elect a new rector. Ulrich Rüdiger will remain in office as rector of the University of Konstanz until 31 July 2018.

Ulrich Rüdiger has been rector of the University of Konstanz since 2009. In 2014, he was re-elected for a second term of office until 2023. After completing his studies in physics, his doctorate and his Habilitation (post-doctoral qualification) at RWTH Aachen University, and after research stays in New York and San José, the Helmstedt native joined the University of Konstanz as professor of experimental solid-state physics in 2002. He has been Vice-President for Research and Early Career Researchers at the German Rectors’ Conference (HRK) since 2014 and is also a member of the HRK’s Standing Committee on Research and Early Career Researchers (including Research Infrastructures). In this and numerous other capacities, Rüdiger oversees various science and research management processes.
