Another good overall result in the 2019 CHE University Ranking for the University of Konstanz: With 19 top and 26 middle group placements in four subjects re-evaluated in the current edition of the ranking, including British Studies and American Studies, German Literature, Romance Literatures and Psychology, the University of Konstanz is measured to perform well by 45 relevant indicators. A total of 72 indicators were used in the ranking, 27 of which could not be grouped and taken into account for all subjects due to insufficient student response rates (British Studies and American Studies and Romance Literatures) and because there were too few graduates who obtained a master’s degree during the reference period (British Studies and American Studies, German Literature and Romance Literatures).

The university is particularly successful in the area of study, which includes five performance indicators such as the international orientation of the bachelor’s and master’s programmes, the overall conditions for completing a bachelor’s or master’s degree within reasonable time as well as support for new students. The subjects evaluated in the ranking achieved nine top results and eight middle group placements in this category, none of them were ranked in the bottom group. In three of the four subjects, satisfaction with the support for new students was especially high. The CHE University Ranking makes a subject-based, multidimensional comparison between approximately 300 institutions of higher education across Germany. Each year, one third of the subjects are re-evaluated. The ranking is based on student surveys and university data from the areas of study, teaching and research. In 2019, the following subjects were reassessed: Applied Sciences, British Studies and American Studies, Architecture, Construction and Environmental Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, Education Science, German Literature, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Mechatronics, Psychology, Romance Literatures and Process Engineering.

Psychology

Psychology at the University of Konstanz has done particularly well in the current CHE University Ranking, with seven top and 14 middle group placements for a total of 21 indicators used. The following performed particularly well according to the student verdict: Library facilities, IT infrastructure and the support available to outgoing study abroad students. As a result, Psychology achieved top results in all of these categories. The overall conditions for completing a bachelor’s degree within reasonable time were also awarded a position in the top group. The results achieved in the area of research likewise speak for themselves: Psychology was accorded top ratings for the following indicators: “external funding per researcher”, “citations per publication” and “doctorates per professor”.

British Studies and American Studies

British Studies and American Studies at the University of Konstanz placed in the top group for three of 17 indicators. However, since only 13 students out of 89 responded to the survey, student opinion on a range of relevant indicators could not be taken into account. Still, in the area of study both the international orientation of the bachelor’s and master’s programmes as well as the support for new students were assessed to be excellent. The overall conditions for completing a bachelor’s degree within reasonable time were awarded a position in the middle group.

German Literature

In German Literature, the University of Konstanz achieved five top results and eleven middle group placements for a total of 17 indicators. German Literature earned top student ratings for the general study conditions, the highly feasible study programmes, the courses available as well as for the support provided to outgoing study abroad students. The support provided to new students was likewise considered to be excellent.

Romance Literatures

Similar to British Studies and American Studies, student participation in the CHE survey in Romance Literatures was very low at eleven responses, which is why only a total of four indicators out of 17 were grouped and taken into account in the ranking. In each of the remaining four categories, however, Romance Literatures achieved a top position: international orientation of the bachelor’s and master’s programmes, overall conditions for completing a bachelor’s degree within reasonable time as well as support for new students.
