Network failure on Thursday, 18 May 2017

On Thursday morning, 18 May 2017, the University of Konstanz experienced a power surge that caused a disruption to parts of its computer network. As a result, the Communication, Information, Media Centre (KIM) systems were also temporarily disabled. As a precautionary measure, the fire department was called to the scene.

Background: The incident occurred during maintenance work on the USV system (uninterrupted power supply system). The university USV system is currently being upgraded. The power surge occurred during the bridging process before connecting the previous system to the new system.

As of 14:30, the electricity supply was restored to the server rooms.  One after another, technicians ran diagnostics on the disrupted systems and restored all network services.

Up-to-date information regarding this and other system disruptions is always available on the social media channels of the University of Konstanz, especially on Twitter.
