Kerstin Krieglstein joins University Supervisory Board at Friedrich Schiller University Jena
On 3 December 2019, Professor Kerstin Krieglstein, rector of the University of Konstanz, was elected to the University Supervisory Board at Friedrich Schiller University Jena. After the Senate’s decision, Kerstin Krieglstein agreed to join the eight-person board for a four-year term.
“It is a great honour to support the Friedrich Schiller University Jena and its continued strategic development in this role. I thank the Senate and the entire university in Jena for their trust as I look forward to working with the other board members,” says Kerstin Krieglstein. “As a member, I think it is important to strengthen the university’s characteristic profile while helping it to successfully expand upon its underlying structures. I appreciate the university’s forward-looking concepts, like the “Campus Inselplatz” and the new communication centres that promote dialogue and scientific exchange as a means of signalling the university’s openness to engaging with society”, Krieglstein explains.
At Friedrich Schiller University Jena, the University Supervisory Board has an advisory role as the university defines its strategic structure and development plan. The board supervises the university’s management and participates in electing the university’s president. It is comprised mainly of external members and represents civil society in university management.
Kerstin Krieglstein was elected to join the board alongside three other new members: Dr Ulrike Gutheil (state secretary of science, research and culture in Brandenburg, 2016-2019), Professor Birgitta König-Ries (Friedrich Schiller University Jena, Heinz-Nixdorf endowed professorship for applied computer science) and Dr Andrea Stiebritz (Friedrich Schiller University Jena, director of Student Affairs). The following current board members were confirmed for another term of office: Professor Wolfgang Marquardt (chair of the board of directors at Forschungszentrum Jülich and vice president of the Helmholtz Association), Dr Ludwin Monz (member of the managing board at ZEISS Group), Professor Hans Weder (former rector of the University of Zurich) and Markus Hoppe (state secretary of economics, science and digital society in Thuringia).
About Professor Krieglstein
Professor Kerstin Krieglstein began her tenure as rector of the University of Konstanz on 1 August 2018. Until then, Kerstin Krieglstein had been Dean of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Freiburg since 1 April 2014. In 2007, she was appointed to the Professorship of Anatomy at the University of Freiburg and led the Department of Molecular Embryology from then on. From 2010 until 2014, she also acted as Vice Dean for Structure, Research and Development in the Faculty of Medicine. From 2001 to 2007, she was chair and director of the Department of Neuroanatomy in the area of human medicine at the University of Göttingen. Before that, she was Associate Professor of Anatomy at Saarland University from 1999 to 2001.
Kerstin Krieglstein studied chemistry and pharmacy at the Phillips-Universität Marburg and the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU) from 1982 to 1987, also gaining her pharmacist’s licence. In 1990, she completed her doctoral studies at the Phillips-Universität Marburg before attaining her habilitation (post-doctoral qualification) in the area of anatomy and cell biology at Heidelberg University. She was selected as a Heisenberg Fellow by the German Research Foundation (DFG) in 1998.
