Speaker:

This conference brings together researchers from diverse fields associated with Victorian studies with the aim of systematically exploring textures – i.e., the structural and surface properties and sensory organisation of texts and objects – in the material and literary cultures of the nineteenth century. The conference probes the methodological potential of textural analysis by exploring the significance of textures to nineteenth-century taxonomies, aesthetics, consumer culture, colonialism, and the consolidation of race- and class-based identities. Pursuing an interdisciplinary approach, the papers and panel discussions focus on textures in dermatology, textile cultures, geology, philosophy, and political history as well as in literature, performance, photography, and aesthetic theory.
