From purchasing to waste management

With its many staff members and students, the University of Konstanz has a significant need for materials and produces a correspondingly large amount of waste. Every year, about 23 tonnes of old appliances and 160 tonnes of organic waste, residual waste, paper and packaging accumulate in the collection stations.

The aim of the working group "From purchasing to waste management" is to promote recycling management and reduce the need for materials and the amount of waste produced at the university. A future policy for sustainable purchasing will promote the purchase of products that are both more durable and repairable, as well as being produced in a socially responsible manner.

In addition, old equipment could be used more economically and sustainably by making it easy to pass it on within the university. We can also improve waste separation and thus increase the recyclable proportion of waste.

A central aspect of our working group is to raise awareness for the issue among staff and students and to share best practices. We work together with the units Budget Planning, Finance and Controlling, Legal Affairs, Occupational Safety, Waste Management as well as the Communication, Information, Media Centre (KIM).
