Academic structure

In bachelor's programmes in the humanities, you choose a minor (40 credits) in addition to your major subject (120 credits). You will also complete courses from the area of transferable skills (20 credits) including an internship. Possible combinations of major and minor subject

In the BA Literatures – Cultures– Languages programme, you can combine your major and minor in any way as long as they are different. Your specializations must not be the same as the minor. Internships

As part of your studies, you are required to complete an internship of at least eight weeks. In addition, you can get credit for further internships of longer duration. The university’s Career Service will support you in finding a suitable internship.

Study abroad

A semester or year abroad is highly recommended and may be credited toward your major as part of building your individual profile. The university promotes study abroad via Erasmus+ and numerous other exchange programmes.

Foreign language skills

If you specialize in a foreign language, you also have to document skills in another foreign language outside this specialization. If you specialize in German literature, you have to document skills in two foreign languages. You can document these skills either by at least 3 years of school language study with the minimum grade of "sufficient" in the last year, or by passing the language test at the Language Institute (SLI) of the University of Konstanz. You do not need to document your language skills when applying for admission, but only when registering for the final examination.

German language skills

International applicants need to submit documentation of their German language skills, level DSH-2 or TestDaF 4. Alternatively, other recognized language tests or recognized school certificates may be submitted. The University of Konstanz does not offer preparatory German language courses or approved German language exams. For this reason, you must submit accredited proof of your German language skills along with your application.

The language of instruction in the bachelor’s programme is German, as well as the corresponding language of specialization.

General higher education entrance qualification (Abitur) or equivalent.

Documentation orientation test

When applying for admission at universities in the state of Baden-Württemberg you have to document having taken an orientation test. The Baden-Württemberg orientation test is the most widely used test. Please send in your certificate of participation along with your application documents.

Some international students are required to pay tuition fees for their first degree studies. Since 2017/18, the state of Baden-Württemberg has required some international students to pay university tuition fees for their first degree studies. Students who are citizens of a country within the European Union (EU) or the European Economic Area (EEA) are not required to pay tuition fees. Doctoral students and certain "Bildungsinländer" (e.g. non-EU citizens with a German Abitur) are also exempt from paying tuition fees. We have compiled more detailed information on fees for you.

Each year, the University of Konstanz grants exemptions to a limited number of particularly gifted international degree-seeking students, in accordance with the "Begabtenbefreiungssatzung" (statutes governing the exemption of gifted students). During the online application process, you will need to enter various kinds of information (school grades, attendance periods, etc.) and upload various PDF documents.

Please make sure that you have the relevant documentation ready. This may include:

• your school-leaving certificate qualifying you for university study (e.g. Abitur)
• documentation of any volunteering you may have done (FSJ, FÖJ, etc.)
• documentation of vocational training you may have completed
• any other relevant documents (medical certificate, etc.)
