Watch out for fake emails that can be used to steal your login data

The Communication, Information, Media Centre (KIM) at the University of Konstanz is asking you to watch out for fake emails that can be used to steal your login data.

In the last months, there have been an increasing number of phishing attacks using fake emails to request that university members go to a website and enter their login data. Please be very careful with this data. Even websites that look like genuine University of Konstanz websites may be fake and only aim at stealing and misusing your login data.

For this reason, we would like to share a few rules that will help keep your login data safe. When you receive emails, keep an eye out for a few suspicious features:

  • These kind of emails are often written in English and/or in poor German. You should be suspicious if the spelling/grammar seems strange to you.
  • Carefully check the sender and the address of the link you are being asked to click on. Is the sender reliable and does the email content make sense? Do all of the URLs include uni-konstanz.de or do they link to an external server with a similar name that is not a university website? Do not click on any links that you are unsure about.
  • You can check the link listed in the email by copying the URL and pasting it into your internet browser.
  • Does the email have a signature? Is the website available via https (does it show the lock icon next to the address in your browser) and does it have a valid certificate?
  • Never ever enter a password simply because you are asked to do so. Trust your intuition and ask the KIM team if you are unsure what to do. We are happy to help you evaluate these kinds of emails.
  • Please contact KIM support if you think that you may have received a phishing email and entered your login data on an unsecure page as a result.

You can be sure that no staff member of KIM will ever ask you to give your password, neither personally, nor via phone or email.
