Prof. Dr. Isabell Otto

Isabell Otto is professor for Media Studies at the University of Konstanz since 2017. She is a Principal Investigator of the Centre for Human | Data | Society since 2022. She studied Theatre, Film and Television Studies, German Studies, and Philosophy at the University of Freiburg, of Cologne and Sorbonne Nouvelle Paris III (UFR Cinéma et audiovisuel). In 2002 she received a master’s degree (thesis: Unbounded Games. An Analysis of Selected Films), followed by a doctorate in 2008 (thesis: Aggressive Media. On the History of Knowledge about Media Violence) and a habilitation in 2017 (thesis: The time of networking. Orders of Time under the Condition of Digital Media) at the University of Konstanz. She was member of the Steering Team for the establishment of the Advanced Data and Information Literacy Track at the University of Konstanz. Until 2022 she held a research professorship in the DFG research group "Media and Participation. Between Demand and Entitlement" for “Media Participation in Digital Cultures”. In 2016 she was awarded the DFG's Heinz Meier Leibnitz Prize. Isabell Otto has expert knowledge in Digital Cultures and Data Literacy. She is currently researching data literacy as cultural capital on social media platforms, questions of social cohesion and belonging in digital communities and the media-technological conditions of flight and migration.
