Project 3: The role of response categories for task performance
Field: Cognitive psychology
Project manager: Prof. Dr. Ronald Hübner
Project agent: Dipl. Psych. Kai Robin Grzyb
Project Description

The cognitive psychological research project focuses on the mechanisms of the intentional selection of responses to stimuli, i.e. the processes of constructing so called response functions. Thereby, the mental representations of stimuli and responses play an important role. Whereas the significance of stimulus categories has been studied intensively, little is known about the role of response categories.

Therefore, the planned project will examine in detail the importance of response categories in the construction of response functions. Particularly interesting is to what extent the used response categories are determined automatically by the involved stimulus categories. This would relate directly to limits of intentionality.
Furthermore, the flexibility of already established response functions and the role of inhibitory processes in action control will be studied. As far as possible, it is planned to build a formal model of these processes.
