Absolute Zero: cryogenics & the mastery of cold - the coolest science ever

Jour Fixe talk by Torsten Pietsch on January 10, 2018

Torsten Pietsch is a Research Fellow at the Zukunftskolleg affiliated with the Department of Physics.

We take for granted artificial refrigeration in countless every-day situations, be it air-conditioning or frozen food. Yet, our mastery of cold is the result of a long and fascinating endeavor, spurred by scientific curiosity and technological advance, that brought us things like MRI diagnosis, superconducting high-speed transportation and quantum computation. In his lecture, Torsten explored the key concepts and major breakthroughs in the field of low-temperature physics that lead to the understanding of cold and drives the race towards the ultimate temperature limit.
