Frank Moorhouse was at the Zukunftskolleg from 06/2009 to 07/2009. He was an Artist in Residence and had been invited by Gerhart von Graevenitz.

During his stay at the University of Konstanz, Frank Moorhouse focused primarily on the Cold War and international perceptions of ideological conflict. The focus of his trilogy, of which the first two volumes had already been honored with prestigious literary awards, was the postwar period in Australia. Frank Moorhouse completed a large chapter of his novel - 9500 words - which was set at the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna. He also participated in weekly creative writing workshops run by Christa Knell-Woolf King and in an intensive workshop organized by her.
The Department of Literature was also very interested to have Frank Moorhouse as "Writer in Residence" to hold readings, lectures and workshops with the author.

Dr. Alexander Schellow

Freelance Artist, Berlin, Germany

Responsibilities

Alexander Schellow was at the Zukunftskolleg in the following months/years: 03-06/2010, 04/2011, 08-12/2011, 01-02/2012, and 04-05/2012. He was an Artist in Residence and had been invited by David Ganz and Zsuzsanna Török.

The intersections of Alexander Schellow's work with the fellows' research projects were diverse and of a wide range, from the humanities to the natural sciences. E.g., his film project "Tirana" questioned, among other things, the extent to which political-social systems could be translated into spatial representations and, in turn, how, for example, official maps coincide with the respective specific "perception maps" created in the selective observation from the position of the stranger (migrants from the northern regions, artists themselves) - topics that have far-reaching sociological and political implications. The film project could also be specifically related, among other things, to the work of Anna Lipphardt (former Associate Fellow /Junior Professor of Cultural Studies, Institute of Folklore, University of Freiburg) on the topic of understanding the foreign in the context of ethnographic research and artistic practice, but also to the research project "Topology of Knowledge" conducted by Wolfgang Freitag (Department of Philosophy), in that Schellow placed the question of perception, knowledge order, and its visual modeling at the center of the work.
Further interfaces of Alexander Schellow's multifaceted work with the projects in the Zukunftskolleg were reflected in research questions about space, spatial location, and locality as sociocultural factors of knowledge production and artistic work.

Responsibilities

Hari Sridhar is an independent researcher and an honorary fellow of the Archives at the National Centre for Biological Sciences, in Bangalore, India. Since early 2016, he has been interviewing authors of well-known papers in ecology and evolution. He is a Writer in Residence and has been invited by Gisela Kopp.

During his time at the Zukunftskolleg, Hari Sridhar will work towards finishing a book manuscript based on his interviews of authors of classic papers (commissioned by Cambridge University Press) and creating a digital exhibition of scientific papers annotated with material from the interviews. He would also like to use this time to write a long-form essay on the
role of serendipity and chance events in science, illustrated with examples from his interviews. In addition to these concrete research outputs, Hari Sridhar’s presence at the Zukunftskolleg will be of great value to other fellows and the University’s academic community: 1. Hari Sridhar’s vast experience in researching, conducting and processing interviews (> 170 interviews) could be of use to scholars in other fields that use interviewing as a research method. The Zukunftskolleg community will also benefit from Hari Sridhar’s skills as a writer and magazine editor. 2. Hari Sridhar’s research on the making of scientific knowledge, from the perspective of ecology and evolution, will be of interest to Philosophers of Science, especially those interested in the emerging field of Philosophy of Science in Practice. 3. The research groups in Konstanz that study collective animal behaviour will benefit from Hari Sridhar’s knowledge of collective behaviour from a mixed-species social group perspective. At the same time, this opportunity will help Hari Sridhar discuss and get critical feedback on his research, both from the ecology and evolution groups in the University, as well as scholars from other relevant fields.

Responsibilities

Patrick Tresset was at the Zukunftskolleg from 02/2013 to 10/2013. He was an Artist in Residence and had been invited by Giovanni Galizia and Oliver Deussen.

The main focus of the collaborative project with Oliver Deussen was getting eDavid, Oliver Deussen’s robot dedicated to painting, to produce portraits that could be evaluated as interesting by a specialized audience from fields such as computational creativity, computational aesthetic, robotic research, and in the contemporary art world. The quality of the work produced by the robots had to be of a high artistic standard so that it could be considered in an international contemporary art context.
Patrick Tresset and Oliver Deussen presented the results of their collaboration as well as individual works in an exhibition in the Bildungsturm Konstanz in 2013. Albert Kümmel-Schnur curated the exhibition. Patrick Tresset further created the artwork for the Zukunftskolleg's Alumni Career Paths Series in 2017.
