About the event:

Why are some minority regions open, others aversive to immigration? Christina Zuber (University of Konstanz) will answer this question in a presentation of her recently published book. Anita Manatschal (University of Neuchâtel) and Marius Busemeyer (University of Konstanz) will provide comments before opening up for discussion with the audience. The event will be moderated by Kirsten Mahlke (University of Konstanz) and an apéro awaits those attending in person.

About the book:

Historical legacies are frequently invoked in popular and academic accounts of the politics of migration, but the mechanisms of transmission of such legacies have so far been left underspecified. Christina Zuber develops a theory of ideational stabilization that serves to explain stable political choices despite radically changing economic and institutional incentives. Empirically she studies such ideational stabilization in Catalonia (Spain), which nowadays takes an inclusive approach to immigration, and South Tyrol (Italy), where immigration is framed as a threat. The comparison shows that the political economy of historical industrialization and internal migration can explain these differences.
