Abstract

With the continuing growth of modern communications technology, increasingly large amount of information are being transmitted or stored in digital forms. These data come from a wide range of sources such as video-conferencing services, facsimile transmission of printed material, graphic images, transmission of remote sensing images obtained from satellites and reconnaissance aircrafts, weather photographs, archiving of medical images, police records of finger prints, and engineering drawings. As a result, both transmission channel bandwidth and storage media are becoming limited. The problem of limited bandwidth and storage becomes even more apparent with the recent introduction of hifh definition television (HDTV) and the integrated services digital network (ISDN). It is therefore important that efficient methods must be developed in order to reduce both the required transmission bandwidth and the storage space.
