T. Ida. Improvement of fractal image coding using new code-decision-criterion. In Proceedings of the International Picture Coding Symposium PCS'94, Sacramento, California, 1994.

Abstract

The fractal image coding method has recently attracted attention, because of its ability to present images at very low bit rates. This method was originally proposed by Barnsley [1] and applied to gray scale images by Barnsley [2] [3] and Jacquin [4]. In fractal coding the quality of decoded images is affected by not only the distance between the original image and a collage but also a contractivity factor of fractal transformation. However, the fractal transformation is determined based on the distance between the original image and a collage in conventional methods. This paper presents a new criterion to determine the fractal transformation. Using the proposed criterion instead of the conventional one, SNR and subjective quality of decoded images are improved.
