S. A. Hollatz. Digital image compression with two-dimensional affine fractal interpolation functions. Research Report Department of Mathematics and Statistics, University of Minnesota-Duluth, No 91, 1991.
A physical scene captured digitally and stored as achromatic intensities has an underlying fractal structure. Each scan line of the image may be interpreted as a sequence of fractal intensities and a fractal interpolation function may be found to approximate the sequence.
