Abstract

Fractal coding has great potential in the applications which need to achieve high compression ratio. However, the usefulness of fractal coding has been hampered by ist large computational complexity. In this paper, a fast fractal coding scheme using genetic algorithm (GA) is proposed to reduce the computational complexity. The proposed scheme can achieve an acceptable image quality with relatively small amount of computation. The simulation results are compared with an existing fractal coding method. In addition, a novel hybrid video coding scheme is proposed based on the combination of our fast fractal coding method and transform coding. Our simulation results show that we have obtained acceptable image quality by using our proposed scheme in very low bit rate applications.
