F. Dudbridge, Y. Fisher. Attractor optimization in fractal image encoding. In Proc. of the Conference Fractals in Engineering, Arcachon, June 1997.

Abstract

Fractal coders approximate an image with the attractor of an iterated image mapping. The approximating mapping is found by minimizing the distance between the image and one iteration of the mapping. This approach works well despite the lack of a strong theoretical basis, but the problem of finding the true closest attractor is generally intractable. In this paper we describe a restricted class of fractal transforms for which attractor optimization is possible. We demonstrate a modest improvement over collage coding, showing that this class of transforms would benefit from attractor coding techniques.
