Abstract

In this paper, we summarize adaptive partitioning methods traditionally used for pixel-based fractal image compression (pixel-based in opposition with hybrid methods). We discuss their properties in terms of flexibility, computing and encoding complexities, and we describe their use in a coding algorithm. In a second part, we propose a new polygonal partition which is fully flexible, and gives a better rate distortion curve, in comparison with results based on adaptive triangulations. We describe a simple approach to compress images, based on unconstrained polygons and contractive affine mappings.
