The mathematical concepts and assertions that form the basis for the method of fractal compression of graphic information are set forth, the idea of the method being first conceived by Barnsley and Sloan. Original proofs of the basic theorems are developed and a brief survey of the attendant results aimed at implementing the method is presented.
