K. U. Barthel. Low Bitrate Image Coding Using Fractal Approximations in the Spatial and Frequency Domain. Frequenz Berlin, 50(910):237-244, 1996.

Abstract

In this paper we give an introduction to fractal image coding and present an extension of the fractal coding scheme. Previously proposed fractal coders suffer from the fact that complexly structured images can not be approximated well. We present a luminance transformation allows an error free approximation of arbitrary image signals. With this transformation both inter- and intra-block redundancy of an image can be exploited to get higher coding gain. The coding results obtained with scheme using an additional entropy constrained selection of the fractal code are superior compared to conventional fractal and transform coding schemes.
