This research is made in the frame of DFG-Project “Comparison of language ideologies in the Soviet Union and the current Russian Federation – Continuity, ruptures, and new orientations”. The proposed presentation focuses on the “Russian world” ideology, in particular its following components: Russian language, culture, Orthodox faith, common historical memory, and general views on social development. The idea of Ukrainian, Belarussian, and Russian unity as “all-Russian people” has been one of the key messages spread in the Russian media as well as clearly stated in the official documents and speeches of the main actors – Vladimir Putin, Patriarch Kirill, Dmitry Peskov, Dmitry Medvedev, and others. Russian state mythology insists that the aforementioned trinity is united not just by territory but also by language, history, culture, and spirit, creating a unique civilization. Repeating the thesis that there is no basis for the existence of Ukraine as a state and a nation, and that the Lord desires a Ukrainian-Russian reunion, Putin tried to lay the foundations for a possible large-scale attack, which began on February 24, 2022, and justify his actions.

Liudmyla Pidkuimukha, Ph.D. is a postdoctoral researcher at the Justus Liebig University Giessen where she investigates Russian language ideology and its connection to the Soviet past. Since 2015, she has been occupying the position of Associate professor at the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy (Ukraine). Her research interests include language policy, bi- and multilingualism, cultural and media studies.
