One of the most important conferences at the interface of chemistry and biology comes to Germany for the first time: the University of Konstanz hosts the renowned “International Symposium on Bioorganic Chemistry” (ISBOC-11) from 27 to 29 September 2017. More than 200 researchers from the fields of chemical biology, bioorganic chemistry and molecular biosciences, from 22 countries, among them the Nobel laureates Professor Aaron Ciechanover (Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2004) and Professor Thomas A. Steitz, PhD (Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2009), will take part in the symposium. Starting on 25 September 2017, junior researchers will have the opportunity to attend the "Autumn School Chemical Biology" with two days of scientific courses in the field of chemical biology, before they join the three-day symposium. ISBOC-11 is organised in partnership with the "International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry" (IUPAC).

"One of our key aims is to bring talented junior researchers and leading chemical biology experts together. It seemed logical to combine the international symposium ISBOC-11, the "Autumn School Chemical Biology" and the "Konstanz Symposium Chemical Biology": an international summit on the one hand, a workshop for talented up-and-coming researchers on the other. Both sides will benefit from exchanging ideas and establishing new contacts", says Professor Andreas Marx, scientific head of the conferences, spokesperson of the Konstanz Research School Chemical Biology (KoRS-CB) and professor of organic chemistry and cellular chemistry at the University of Konstanz.

The "International Symposium on Bioorganic Chemistry" (ISBOC) was founded as a scientific forum in the field of bioorganic chemistry in New York in 1986. It has developed into one of the most important conferences in the area of biochemistry and has so far taken place ten times at selected research locations. The University of Konstanz's strong research profile in chemical biology was one of the reasons for choosing it as the host of the eleventh ISBOC conference, which will take place in Germany for the first time. The University of Konstanz is home to the Research School Chemical Biology, which has received funding within the framework of the German Excellence Initiative since 2007, as well as the Collaborative Research Centre 969 "Chemical and biological principles of cellular proteostasis".
