Networking, dialogue, new scientific perspectives

International Conference of the Konstanz Research School Chemical Biology “Konstanz Symposium Chemical Biology 2015”

Summit meeting in the field of chemical biology: On 8 and 9 October 2015 internationally recognised scientists will attend the third “Konstanz Symposium Chemical Biology” conference of the Konstanz Research School Chemical Biology. Besides showcasing the latest scientific results in the forward-looking field of chemical biology, doctoral students of the graduate research school will have the opportunity to network with experts and engage in interdisciplinary dialogue.

For the first time, the symposium will also be linked to an “Autumn School Chemical Biology” that will offer specialist courses from 5 to 7 October 2015, directly prior to the symposium. Travel grants will be available for the “Autumn School”, thus allowing 25 doctoral students from German and international universities to receive scientific training in chemical biology.

Professor Andreas Marx, head of the graduate research school, will officially open the conference on Thursday, 8 October 2015, at 09:00 in lecture hall A 704 at the University of Konstanz. The programme will combine 13 guest lectures by internationally acclaimed researchers with twelve short presentations by young scientists. Prizes for the best scientific poster will be awarded during a poster exhibition in the evening.

The Konstanz Research School Chemical Biology conference that takes place every two years was once again able to attract prestigious sponsors and cooperation partners. The main sponsors are the pharmaceutical companies Boehringer Ingelheim and Dr. Kade. A further sponsor, the company myPOLS, emerged as a start-up from research at the University of Konstanz’s Department of Chemistry. The companies Trenzyme and Hit Discovery Constance (HDC) contributed prizes for the poster competition. Further cooperation and support has also been provided by the University of Konstanz’s special research area SFB 969 “Chemical and Biological Principles of Cellular Proteostasis” and the Konstanz-based biotechnology network BioLAGO. SFB 969 was approved in 2012 and also organises an international conference every two years, meaning that a high-level symposium in chemical biology can be held annually at the University of Konstanz, alternating with the graduate research school.

The Konstanz Research School Chemical Biology, supported by the Departments of Biology and Chemistry as well as Computer and Information Science, was successful in the first and second phases of the German Excellence Initiative. It has thus received funding from this source starting in 2007 and extending to 2017. It features a steady number of 110 doctoral students and around 50 supervising academic staff. To date the school has produced 80 alumni.
