International day of climate strikes on 20 September 2019

The Fridays for Future network (FFF) has called for a global day of climate strikes on 20 September 2019. Young people are asking all generations to come out and demand effective environmental protection and climate policies. In Konstanz, too, a demonstration will take place under the motto #AllesfürsKlima (everything for the climate) in addition to other activities to draw attention to FFF priorities.

On 2 May 2019, the city of Konstanz was the first in Germany to work with the Fridays for Future network to declare a state of climate emergency. This was an important first step to intensify climate protection efforts. In order to generate even more interest in the topic and get the attention of national and international policy makers, Fridays for Future has called for all generations to join an international climate strike on 20 September 2019. The day of strikes kicks off the Global Week For Future, which takes place while Germany's "climate cabinet"' members will be meeting in Berlin and the UN climate summit will be held in New York. The demonstrators will raise their voices in support of effective climate policies.

In Konstanz, schoolchildren will be taking part alongside regional networks of students at both local universities, the “Parents for Future” and “Scientists for Future” groups as well as others. The climate strike as well as its activities and goals will also be discussed at the next Rectorate meeting.

The demonstration in Konstanz is set to begin on 20 September 2019, at 11:00 in Herosé Park. At around 12:30, a rally is planned in the city’s “Stadtpark”. University of Konstanz employees may join together in attending the demonstration as part of the staff outing. Participants of the outing programme entitled “Nachhaltig leben in Konstanz” (living sustainably in Konstanz) will get information about climate protection, conserving resources and reducing waste, have the opportunity to discuss these issues and can take part in the global climate strike.
