Mission statement of the University of Konstanz

The University of Konstanz is a research-oriented reform university that meets its social responsibilities by providing high-quality research and educational opportunities. It is committed to the basic idea behind a university, that in order to generate scientific knowledge, close links between research and teaching have to be established and maintained. The university strives to play an important role in addressing contemporary and future social challenges through its research and study programmes.

The principle of independence in research and teaching ensures that the University of Konstanz can help empower society to enlighten itself. The ethical reflection of science on its methods and the consequences of its findings on human beings and their environment is an integral component of this principle.

The university strives to provide its researchers and academics the best conditions for internationally recognised top-level research. It seeks to advance the personal development of highly qualified students, junior researchers and employees.

The University of Konstanz encourages its members to play an active role in research, study, teaching and self-administration. Sustainability is key to its social and institutional processes.

The institution

In order to achieve its aims, the University of Konstanz fosters a culture of creativity in its research and research-supporting institutions. Decision-making processes in its academic self-administration are to be transparent and participatory and should ensure clearly defined responsibilities. The administration supports the researchers at the university in their research and teaching as well as in their self-administration.

Interdisciplinary collaboration is viewed as an essential precondition for top-level research and innovative teaching. The university promotes such interdisciplinary cooperation to the best of its ability. For this reason, the university is divided into departments and faculties and has professorship as its fundamental unit. The unique campus environment with its short distances, together with the open-door policy across the entire university, support this process. The University of Konstanz attaches great importance to performance and functionality within its flat hierarchies. According to its tradition as a reform university, its bodies hold continuous and open discussions on its structures and profile development. Current research areas defining the university's profile are Chemical Biology and Ecology, Decision Sciences, Cultural Sciences as well as Molecular Nano and Materials Sciences.

The University of Konstanz combines top-level research and teaching and introduces students to research early on in their studies. Studying at the university allows for both knowledge transfer and personal development.

The university sees itself as a world for and of learning, working and living. It provides excellent and reliable working conditions in the Konstanz area.

Supporting junior researchers

Through its Code of Practice for Academics between Doctoral Studies and Professorship, the University of Konstanz has strongly committed itself to supporting junior researchers. It supports the career development of women, working couples, and the compatibility of study and research with family life.
