"Tacit Knowledge in Intercultural Communication" meeting

An association for research in cultural studies

To the pages of the Cluster of Excellence "Cultural Foundations of Social Integration"

The DFG has funded the cluster since 2006 and will continue to do so until December 2018 as part of the Excellence Initiative. At that time the cluster of excellence will be integrated into an internationally interconnected centre for research in cultural studies.

The cluster of excellence addresses an explosive topic with basic theoretical approaches. With its two core concepts of ‘culture’ and 'integration' , it combines cultural and socio-scientific issues in a subject cluster, ranging from philology to history, philosophy, sociology and political science to law.

Brief description

The Cluster of Excellence "Cultural Foundations of Social Integration" examines processes of integration and disintegration over time and on all social levels - from the requirements of family and neighbourly coexistence to policy issues on a global scale. Currently, publicly discussed problems receive not only practical for thought-provoking impulses, but especially a theoretical foundation through the combination of theory and empirically-oriented research.

The individual research components are coordinated so that they not only provide space for quiet and focused research, but also lively debates and stimulating presentations. The active scientific exchange is promoted through the various disciplines involved - history and sociology, social and cultural anthropology, literature, art and media studies, philosophy, politics and public administration and law - and the close cooperation with international researchers from around the world.
