Germany’s largest society of scholars in the natural sciences and in medicine accepts excellent scholars from around the world to its ranks. The Leopoldina honours scholars who have made pioneering contributions to biology with the Mendel Medal. The medal is named after the natural scientist Gregor Mendel, the well-known “father of genetics”, who discovered and lent his name to the Laws of Heridity.
