Mathematics – Master of Science

Symbolbild

Postgraduate study programme which requires a first university degree. For this, the University of Konstanz offers the undergraduate Bachelor of Science study programme in mathematics.

Mathematics is one of the oldest sciences and plays an indispensable role in many fields of modern science (e.g. physics, computer science, engineering, economics). The master’s programme in mathematics builds on your existing knowledge and skills by expanding and deepening them.

Prospects and opportunities

Career prospects

There is a broad spectrum of work with tasks such as calculating the aerodynamic resistance of a vehicle’s bodywork, or improving the production processes of a software provider. Whilst a bank needs an assessment model for risk management, an insurance company is looking for a market analysis and the evaluation of its own insurance products. By studying mathematics you will acquire the necessary basic methodical qualifications for this, whilst you gain specific specialist knowledge and skills in the various areas of your minor. In the professional world mathematics in the narrower sense often plays a lesser role, whereas the skills, such as the ability to think in abstract terms, to recognise logical relationships and to formulate models gain in importance.
Larger numbers of mathematicians are employed in industry and the commercial sphere, for instance in company development departments and in data processing, in administration departments, insurance companies, banking and the software sector, and in technical and economic service enterprises.

Programme structure

Programme start

Winter semester & Summer semester

Academic structure

During your studies you will focus on certain areas of mathematics. You will choose your area of specialisation from the department’s main research areas (analysis and numerics, real geometry and algebra, stochastic and statistics). In addition to this, you will attend courses in non-mathematical disciplines (e.g. biology, chemistry, computer science, physics, psychology, philosophy, linguistics or economics).

Additional information about the programme structure is available at the exam regulations (in German).

Internship and abroad

Internships

Internships help you to gain insights into various professional areas and to build up contacts. The Department of Mathematics (in German) or the staff of the university’s Career Service (in German) are here to help you find a suitable placement.

Study abroad

A period of study abroad in the second or third semester is highly recommended.  Equivalent study and exam achievements acquired during your stay will be recognised. The university enables study abroad via the ERASMUS programme and numerous other exchange programmes.

Why study Mathematics at Konstanz?

The master’s programme offers you the opportunity to set your own areas of emphasis. The Department of Mathematics offers a broad and diverse spectrum of classes and events focusing on its main research areas (in German). You carry out your work on the respective contents in small groups, while the research-related teaching keeps you closely in touch with the latest developments.

What interests and skills should I have?

You should really enjoy the subject and have a definite desire to deepen your mathematical knowledge and skills. You have already demonstrated your endurance and determination by completing your undergraduate degree. Similarly, you have already trained your logical thinking and systemic understanding.

Language skills

International applicants: documentation of German language skills, level DSH-1 or TestDaF 3, or a language test recognised as equivalent.

Teaching language and language(s) of instruction
