Computer Science – Bachelor minor subject

Symbolbild

Elective minor in a first degree programme (bachelor). A minor subject may only be chosen in combination with a major subject.

How can we depict trees as realistically as possible in a computer game? How should traffic lights be programmed to regulate traffic flows? How do you design a secure system for online banking? In the broadest sense, these and other questions are concerned with how data are stored, bundled, exchanged and depicted.

Computer and information science is a discipline that extends into most areas of our everyday lives. Mathematics and engineering science form the foundations.

Academic structure

Depending on your combination of subjects, computer and information science as a minor accounts for at least 39 ECTS credits. In the basic study area you have to attend four courses (computer science concepts, programming course I, computer systems and database systems). Following this, you can choose from six different elective areas, e.g. the area Data Science, Visual Computing or Interactive Systems or you can individually choose two advanced modules from the course offers of the department.

Please check the Exam regulations (partly in German) for more information about the programme structure.

Impressions from students and lecturers

Requirements

What interests and skills should I have?

If you want to study computer science, you need to enjoy mathematics and logical thinking. If you already have programming skills, it will be a great benefit, but it is not a specific requirement. Good English skills will help you read the relevant literature, as a large amount is written in this language. During your studies you will often be working in a team, so it is important that you have good communication skills. In addition to this, a certain amount of creativity will help you to find new approaches to challenging questions.

Language skills

You do not have to proof additional language skills.

Language(s) of instruction

The languages of instruction and examinations are German and English.

Admission requirements

The same general entry requirements apply for the major and minor:

General higher education entrance qualification (Abitur) or equivalent.

Fees

Semester fee

All students enrolled at the University of Konstanz are charged a semester fee each semester, similar to all other German universities. Here you can find the current semester fee and its individual components.

Tuition fees for first degree studies for certain international students
Since winter semester 2017/18, the state of Baden-Württemberg has required some international students to pay tuition fees for their first degree studies. The following students are not required to pay tuition fees: citizens of a country within the European Union (EU) or the European Economic Area (EEA), doctoral students and certain “Bildungsinländer” (e.g. non-EU citizens with a German “Abitur”). More detailed information can be found here.

Each year, the University of Konstanz grants exemptions to a limited number of particularly gifted international degree-seeking students in accordance with the university’s “Begabtenbefreiungssatzung” (statutes governing the exemption of gifted students). More detailed information can be found here.

Tuition fees for second degree studies for all students
All students are required to pay tuition fees for their second degree studies. More detailed information can be found here.

Application and application documents

This study programme has no admission restrictions.

It is possible to begin the study programme in the winter and summer semester. Application deadlines are 15 September and 15 March. Please note that if you have chosen a major with admission restrictions and an earlier application deadline (15 July), this earlier deadline is valid for all of your chosen subjects. In other words, if the deadline for your major is 15 July, then your complete application for all subjects (major and minor) must be submitted by this date.

If you transfer from another subject, we recommend you start the bachelor's minor in the winter semester.

Application documents

During the online application process, you will need to enter various kinds of information (school grades, attendance periods etc.) and upload various PDF documents. Please make sure that you have the relevant documentation ready. This may include:

  • your Abitur certificate (German general higher education entrance qualification)
  • documentation of any volunteering you may have done (FSJ, FÖJ etc.)
  • any documentation about vocational training you may have completed
  • any other required documents (medical certificate etc.)

An electronic assistant will guide you through the application process. Required fields are marked by an asterisk (*).
