Undergraduate study programme leading to a first professional degree.The major Literatures – Cultures– Languages combines specializations in individual philologies with theoretical and methodological content from general literature studies as well as transcultural perspectives that reach beyond the chosen specialization into neighbouring literary traditions and cultures.

By studying texts and narratives of all kinds, including other media, you will explore different cultural areas and thus enrich your literature studies with knowledge from the cultural studies field. We have compiled an overview of the general structure of the bachelor's programme Literatures – Cultures– Languages for you. In the module guides you will find the respective study structure of the chosen specializations.

Possible combinations of major and minor subject
In bachelor's programmes in the humanities, you choose a minor (40 credits) in addition to your major subject (120 credits). You will also complete courses from the area of transferable skills (20 credits) including an internship. Internships and stays abroad

Internship

As part of your studies, you are required to complete an internship of at least eight weeks. In addition, you can get credit for further internships of longer duration. The university’s Career Service will support you in finding a suitable internship.

Stay abroad

A semester or year abroad is highly recommended and may be credited toward your major as part of building your individual profile. The university promotes study abroad via Erasmus+ and numerous other exchange programmes.

Admission requirements for studying

General higher education entrance qualification (Abitur) or equivalent.

Documentation orientation test
When applying for admission at universities in the state of Baden-Württemberg you have to document having taken an orientation test. The Baden-Württemberg orientation test is the most widely used test. Please send in your certificate of participation along with your application documents.

Semester fee
All students enrolled at the University of Konstanz are charged a semester fee each semester, similar to all other German universities. Here you can find the current semester fee and its individual components.

Tuition fees for first degree studies for certain international students
Since winter semester 2017/18, the state of Baden-Württemberg has required some international students to pay tuition fees for their first degree studies. The following students are not required to pay tuition fees: citizens of a country within the European Union (EU) or the European Economic Area (EEA), doctoral students and certain “Bildungsinländer” (e.g. non-EU citizens with a German “Abitur”). Each year, the University of Konstanz grants exemptions to a limited number of particularly gifted international degree-seeking students in accordance with the university’s “Begabtenbefreiungssatzung” (statutes governing the exemption of gifted students). Required language skills

Foreign language skills
If you specialize in a foreign language, you also have to document skills in another foreign language outside this specialization. If you specialize in German literature, you have to document skills in two foreign languages. You can document these skills either by at least 3 years of school language study with the minimum grade of "sufficient" in the last year, or by passing the language test at the Language Institute (SLI) of the University of Konstanz. You do not need to document your language skills when applying for admission, but only when registering for the final examination.

German language skills
International applicants need to submit documentation of their German language skills, level DSH-2 or TestDaF 4. Alternatively, other recognized language tests or recognized school certificates may be submitted. The University of Konstanz does not offer preparatory German language courses or approved German language exams. For this reason, you must submit accredited proof of your German language skills along with your application.

Teaching and examination language

The language of instruction in the bachelor’s programme is German, as well as the corresponding language of specialization.

Application documents

During the online application process, you will need to enter various kinds of information (school grades, attendance periods etc.) and upload various PDF documents. Please make sure that you have the relevant documentation ready. This may include:

  • your Abitur certificate (German general higher education entrance qualification)
  • documentation of any volunteering you may have done (FSJ, FÖJ etc.)
  • any documentation about vocational training you may have completed
  • any other required documents (medical certificate etc.)

An application is possible during the following period: 07.05. - 15.09.
