Preparatory courses for specific subjects and study programmes

3 - 27 September 2018: Preparatory course in mathematics for students of Mathematics, Mathematical Finance, Physics (taught in German)

The transition from school mathematics to university mathematics usually is quite challenging for new students. University mathematics requires a high level of creativity and the ability to think in abstract terms. Schools are only able to teach these abilities to a limited extent. This is why even those who always have had good grades find it hard to live up to the requirements of university mathematics lectures for beginners. The preparatory course in mathematics will facilitate the transition to university mathematics. In the four-week-course, you will be introduced to the abstract approach typical for university mathematics and be given plenty of opportunity to practice using it. Participation in the preparatory course is not compulsory, but highly recommend to all new students!

Target group: This course is mainly designed for new students of
- Mathematics (B.Sc. and B.Ed.)
- Mathematical Finance (B.Sc.)
- Physics (B.Sc.)
- Economics and Business Education (M.Sc.)

Please read the additional information on the preparatory course in mathematics and register so we can plan ahead.

4 - 12 October 2018: Compact course - introduction to the calculation methods in the natural sciences for new students of Physics, Biology, Mathematics, (Chemistry, Computer Science).

Many new students find mathematics at the university-level extremely challenging, even those who always have had good grades. Often they struggle to understand the lectures and complete the exercises.
In order to smooth your transition to university mathematics, the Department of Physics runs a compact course on the calculation methods in the natural sciences (taught in German) for all first-semester students of the Faculty of Sciences. Participants of previous years said they hugely benefited from this course.
Aims of the course are to: get used to formal thinking, accept mathematics as an important tool and get practice. In addition to this, you will refresh and deepen your knowledge of mathematics.

Target group: First-semester students from the Faculty of Sciences, especially of Physics, Mathematics and Biology. Chemistry and Computer Science students may also take part if they are interested. Registration is not necessary.

You will find more detailed information about the compact course on calculation methods in the natural sciences on the website of the department.

8 - 12 October 2018: Preparatory course in mathematics (Department of Chemistry)

The Department of Chemistry runs a preparatory course in mathematics for all new students at the department which is taught in German. Registration is not necessary. Participation is voluntary.
The course takes place: Monday 10:00-16:00 in room M 629, Tuesday to Friday 8:15-16:00 in room M 629.

Target group: New students of the bachelor's programmes in Chemistry, Life Science and Nanoscience and of the Chemistry Teacher Education Programme.

Here you can find more information on starting your studies in the Department of Chemistry.

8 - 12 October 2018: Preparatory course in mathematics (Department of Computer Science)

The Department of Computer and Information Science runs a one-week preparatory course in mathematics (taught in German) to smooth the transition from school to university. In this course you can brush up on your school knowledge of mathematics and learn how to work at the same (university) level with your fellow students. The preparatory course in mathematics runs all day. We absolutely recommend this course to new students in the Bachelor's Programme in Computer Science!
You do not need to register. Further information is available in the course catalogue.

Target group: New students in the bachelor's programme in Computer Science
