3. Optional services provided by the departments

Family-friendly structures

The departments provide the following services to round off the university’s support for student parents. If you would like to know more about the services offered by your department, contact the respective departmental student advisory service.

1. Advice for the individualized planning of your studies

The departmental student advisory service advises you on how to plan your studies (i.e. individualized part-time studies). This means that you may complete some courses in a different order than the usual modules if this allows you to better balance your study and family responsibilities. Each semester, you can agree about which courses you will complete during the respective semester.

2. Flexible attendance requirements

You can arrange individual attendance requirements with the responsible lecturer and agree on achievements you need to complete instead. Of course, you will need to provide documentation (e.g. description of your current family situation, including, if required, statements from other childcare providers, that they are not available during the classes to be missed).

3. Flexible completion of internship

In accordance with the examination regulations, internships can be either broken up into smaller segments of time or the working hours reorganized so that childcare can be arranged for your child(ren).

4. Electronic services and digital media for courses

KIM provides a range of electronic services, for example, recordings of some lectures, depending on the course and resources available. Please contact your lecturer to find out whether recordings will be made of his/her lectures. List of virtual lectures, talks and events

5. Alternative coursework or performance assessments

You may also complete alternative coursework or performance assessments. Appropriate alternatives are those that allow for an equivalent assessment of the course’s content and competencies. In order to complete these alternatives, you will need to provide documentation as to why an exception to the usual coursework or performance assessments needs to be made and receive the approval of both the course lecturer/examiner and the respective Examination Board. Please contact the relevant lecturer if you need to request this option.

6. Admission to specific seminars or practice tutorials

You can request admission to a specific course if you explain your reasons and provide documentation why your childcare situation only allows you to attend this particular course. Classic examples include courses that only admit a limited number of students. If this applies to you, please contact the departmental student advisory service or the respective lecturer before the registration period ends.
