Frauen, die forschen

Forscherinnen sichtbar gemacht. (visualising women researchers)

6 - 29 November 2009, University of Konstanz

4 - 30 December 2009, Kulturzentrum am Münster, Konstanz

The photo exhibition "Frauen, die forschen" (women researchers) showcases 24 top-level researchers, photographed by Bettina Flitner.

Bettina Flitner uses larger-than-life screens to present her photographs and texts, providing insights into the careers and research areas of 24 internationally-acclaimed female natural scientists. All of them have accomplished and continue to achieve extraordinary things in their respective disciplines. They research vaccines to combat HIV, calculate the risks of financial transactions or investigate solar energy. All of their CVs offer surprises. The exhibition was inspired by a missing photograph. When the names of the 1995 Nobel Laureates were published there was no professional portrait of Christiane Nüsslein-Volhard that the press could use. Bettina Flitner’s work seeks to fill this gap by portraying extraordinary female researchers with successful careers in science.

The photo exhibition took place in the context of the “Jahr der Wissenschaft 2009” (year of science 2009). It was organised by the University of Konstanz’s Office for Equal Opportunity, Family Affairs and Diversity and the Academic Staff Development unit in cooperation with the Amt für Schulen, Bildung und Wissenschaft of the city of Konstanz.
