Brain Gain

Vielfältige Potenziale für die Spitzenforschung (diverse potential for top-level research)

29 - 30 July 2010, Inselhotel Konstanz

Hosted by the University of Konstanz’s Academic Staff Development team and Office for Equal Opportunity, Family Affairs and Diversity as well as the Konstanz Science Forum.

The “Akademie am See” provided the location for international discussion on “Brain Gain” with a focus on gender and diversity aspects. In the current debate on “excellence”, the conference focused on how researchers can find their place in the academic environment, and how this process is influenced by their individual characteristics and competencies, such as international background, gender identity or impairment.

Two complementary perspectives of how to advance the careers of innovative junior researchers were discussed: From the point of view of junior researchers: Which criteria define excellence, and how can excellent researchers position themselves so as to be recognised for their achievements. From the point of view of university policy: Which characteristics of universities offer creative researchers (both men and especially women) the best opportunities and anchor innovative research at these institutions for the long term.
