On the history of the University of Konstanz Alumni Association (VEUK e.V.)

The University of Konstanz Alumni Association (VEUK e.V.) was established in 1997. It was founded as a registered non-profit organisation.

Since its inception, it has cultivated connections between the University of Konstanz and its alumni. The 170 founding members came together in 1997 for the purpose of giving something back to “their” university. This is how the association’s mission was born: to support research and teaching projects as well as projects involving campus life. VEUK has awarded a prize for excellence in academic performance within each department since 1999. In 2000, a separate award was instituted that recognises academic achievements by international students.

2005 marks a particularly important year in the history of VEUK. Several important changes were made to its leadership and focus. Professor Horst Sund, VEUK’s long-time chairman and the current honorary chairman, passed the baton to a new generation. It also saw the beginning of new partnerships, for example with KonNet e.V., the Department of Politics and Public Administration alumni association that was founded in 1995, and with university sports, who have since offered discounts for University of Konstanz alumni.

A dedicated alumni relations office staffed by full-time personnel was established in 2008. Maintaining good alumni relations is important to the University of Konstanz and its management, and the alumni office ensures that this work can be carried out consistently.

In the spring of 2016, the members’ assembly passed a motion for free student membership. Within a few months, the number of student members quadrupled. This development emphasises the association’s objective to further cement relations between (former) students and the University of Konstanz by maintaining greater presence on campus.

The alumni association is a powerful tool for developing strong synergies between university alumni and its current members.
