The Institution
The University of Konstanz was founded in the late sixties of the 20 th century as a reform university. The aim was to establish an excellent research oriented university ccomparable with Princeton University, USA. The departments of the University of Konstanz’ three sections (mathematical and natural sciences, law and public administration, humanities) constantly achieve high rankings in the annual evaluation of German universities, both in the field of research grants as well as in teaching all fields. The University of Konstanz upholds partnerships and strong scholarly and educational exchange both of scholars and students with 130 universities worldwide – among them Yale, Brighton, York, Charles University in Prague and other universities, above all in Eastern Europe.
The University of Konstanz’ research administration office has extensive experience in supporting research projects. Large-scale projects conducted at Konstanz have been funded by a wide range of national and international foundations, among others through the Framework Programmes of the European Commission.
The Person in Charge of the project consortium “Crime and Culture”, Professor Hans-Georg Soeffner, holds the chair for the Sociology of Culture, Knowledge and Religion at the University of Konstanz and is director of the ”Sozialwissenschaftliches Archiv Konstanz”, which has become the Central Archive of the German Sociological Society. Professor Soeffner has an excellent international reputation in empirical research and theory construction rooted in a plentitude of projects in a wide range of sociological fields.

Qualification for the Accomplishment of the Task
Hans-Georg Soeffner is one of the most influential German representatives of a qualitative-hermeneutical sociology in the tradition of a phenomenologically oriented Sociology of Knowledge. As director of the “Sozialwissenschaftliches Archiv” / Central Archive of the German Sociological Society, he manages a highly reputable instition for the research of the history of sociology with high international standing. He brings to the project his international reputation and his experience and competence in the field of worldwide scholarly communication, which is documented by his participation in different international networks and institutions. For example, the archive so-operates with the Alfred-Schütz Archive at Waseda University in Tokyo, Japan, and is a founding member of the OPO (Organization of Phenomenological Organisation), a worldwide network of phenomenological researchers and research institutions, located at Charles University Prague, Czech Republic. Through frequent international conferences on key topics, the archive is very influential in the development of qualitative social research and of sociological theory in Germany.
Since 1975, Prof. Soeffner has conducted and co-odinated over 35 national and international research projects in various fields central to the discipline of sociology.

Qualification for the Accomplishment of the Task
As an experienced researcher and co-ordinator of several empirical projects on different subjects (the rise of entrepreneurs as a new social class in the former GDR, the reconstruction of former socialist companies in the Czech Republic, the sociology of politics in historical perspective), Dr. Tänzler is highly qualified in the a nalysis of the cultural aspect of social action under changing societal conditions in modern and transformation societies.
As a member of several administrative committees at the University of Konstanz and long-standing co-director of academic and applied research projects, Dr. Tänzler has excellent management skills in administrative and personnel affairs.
