"Zeit-Geschichten" -
Postrevolutionäre Memoiren Frankreichs und das Werk Stendhals

Projektskizze

Abstract:

With the beginning of the nineteenth century, the novel assumes a new quality of up-to-dateness due to a stronger embedment of the fictional plot in the context of contemporary history. Since Auerbach this popular thesis has led to numerous studies on the historical novel and on the (relation and) differences between fictional and factual literature, especially between novel and historiography.
However, the dissertation project analyses said development of the novel in view of a specific publication phenomenon, that is: the memoir. Large numbers of memoirs and whole series of memoirs were published mainly under the restored Bourbon regime. Memoirs and contemporary novels both precede and accompany the first ‘modern’ novels.
Memoirs claim to be factual narrations, but with an exclusive, that is to say subjective knowledge of their own time. They reflect the irruption of the real embodied by the French revolution and the following drastic changes, but simultaneously bring up the question in which way historical experience is possible and appropriately representable. Thereby they participate thereby in a discussion taking part in contemporary historiography und philosophy (the Ideologues, A. Thierry) about subjective experience as a better means of knowledge versus an objective access to the world.
The novel, though a fictional narration, is involved in this discussion too and responds to the memoirs that immediately preceded it. In this sense Stendhal can be considered to be central to the development of the modern contemporary novel, since he was not only a great reader of memoirs, but was also strongly influenced by the historical-philosophical current of the Ideologues. His oeuvre does not only include novels, but also historical as well as (auto-) biographical works.
Therefore, my research focusses on possible parallels in narratability and experienceability of contemporary history as well as on processes of identity in both the work (especially the novels) of Stendhal and in the memoirs, taking into account, that the novel expounds the problems of the genre ‘memoir’ and by that, of telling contemporary history as such. The project seeks to contribute to central aspects of the ‘contemporary novel’ in its historical and literary historical context. Therefore, the relationship between the novel and the memoirs needs to be clarified that goes beyond a simple, one-sided reception.
