Nancy Cartwright is one of the most important and influential philosophers of science today. She has, over four books and almost one hundred articles, developed a provocative philosophy of science, combining a pluralistic empiricism with a realist metaphysics. Her work covers both the most general issues in philosophy of science and quite specific issues in particular sciences - most extensively in physics and economics. In this workshop, an international group of philosophers will critically explore each of these aspects of Cartwright's work, with responses by Cartwright herself.

The workshop is supported by the Thyssen-Foundation, the Center for Junior Research Fellows of the University of Konstanz and by a Sofja Kovalevskaja Award of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the Programme for Investment in the Future (ZIP) of the German Government. It is being organized by Luc Bovens (University of Colorado at Boulder)and Stephan Hartmann (University of Konstanz).
