Advantages and beauty of developable surfaces in avantgarde architecture

Developable surfaces (torses, in special cases cylinders and cones) are ruled surfaces with vanishing Gaussian curvature and can therefore be unfolded to the plane without distortions. This makes them very useful for avantgarde architecture: The surfaces can be built completely smooth without the exorbitant costs of general freeform surfaces. We give a survey both from the geometrical and architectural point of view. We also present a programme that allows the artist to design such surfaces interactively. For real time calculations, we introduce an efficient algorithm.
