The information technology landscape is strongly drifting towards the use of different services as public utilities. One core component of such utilities would be a highly available, multiple-writer capable, versioning, and secure storage system. This talk will shortly present one approach to build such a system, deriving a global-scale architecture from basic functional requirements. In this and similar systems, a challenging set of security-relevant aspects needs to be covered, to make the solution viable in a potentially hostile environment. Two of those aspects will be explored in more detail: We will first look at our model and realization for access control to stored objects, providing users with end-to-end based security properties. Then we will explore issues with deleting data in fully distributed environments, leading over to some of the many open questions still facing us.
