Interactive Volume Rendering on Mobile Computing Platforms for Clinical Decision Making

abstract

In recent years there has been significant growth in the use of 3D, patient-specific models to predict the effects of neuromodulation therapies such as deep brain stimulation (DBS). However, translating these models from a research environment to the patient bedside has been a challenge, primarily due to the specialized, complex software that is required to provide such visualization. In this talk I'll present ImageVis3D Mobile our experimental volume-rendering environment , which is specifically designed for mobile computing devices such as the iPhone or iPad. To demonstrate the practical use of a volume-rendering environment on such restricted hardware, which has very little screen space and processing power, I will use this application to visualize patient-specific models of DBS relative to a pre-computed atlas. There are several features of this approach that are attractive for clinical decision making: First, both patient models and atlas can be wirelessly pushed to the mobile device; Second, the user interface is simple and familiar; Third, the device and application can be used interactively at the point of care, and does not require a workstation with complex, specialized software.
